Dumping Ground for Random Stuff

what people are saying...

"Adam Rocks. He invented the Internet. He may also have invented Al Gore.
He certainly invented several interesting varieties of tomato sauce that
nobody at Oracle can hope to match, and forget about Redmond - no chance."
      - Mark Searle, former COO, Internet Pictures (1999)

"not half as full-of-sh*t as [in 1992]" - Jon Forrest, UC Berkeley CompSci (1995)

   "better drunk than sober" - ex-girlfriend (1994)

"leader in five-minute perl hacks" - engineering team, Internet Pictures (2000)

"I consider myself a decent programmer, but in fairness, I must confess that
I cannot even compare myself to uber-hackers like Adam Sah and Mary Tork
Roth." - Paul Aoki, Researcher, Xerox PARC (the feeling's mutual, Paul) (1993)

recruiters please note: as of November, 2004 I'm now a manager at Google, and yes that's arguably an oxymoron.

technology predictions

It's a silicon valley parlor game to predict the Next Big Thing. Here are some of mine over the years.
   prediction date action
   -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MP3 will dominate digital music............................... 1998 bought an empeg car stereo
laptops will become commodities............................... 1998 replaced my workstationmade with a laptop
for developers, dual CPU systems crush single-CPU............. 1997 bought one, convinced Cohera to buy them
IDE beats SCSI for desktops and servers....................... 1996 bought dual-IDE compute server
Internet advertising esp. DoubleClick, will become big........ 1996 wrote adserver for Inktomi search engine (doh!)
   Digital cameras will replace 35mm............................. 1995 bought Kodak DC260 (1996), sold 35mm
The Internet/Web will become the "information superhighway", 1995 joined Inktomi, wrote mass customization engine
ie. something will take off and it won't be re-engineered... 1994 wrote an article for Wired's sixth issue
Linux will become dominant Unix, will win server market....... 1994 wrote MS thesis using Linux laptop
Java (Oak) will become the next major programming language,
esp. garbage collection, simple syntax, exceptions, threads. 1993 learned Java (doh: didn't buy SUNW)

some bad guesses: (not sure of dates)
    - WinCE eventually beats Palm (took much too long...)
    - internet stock bubble burst will be capped at -50% (big big oops)
